Recording on Lutefish

Working with Recording Files in Lutefish

Lutefish offers three types of recordings depending on your needs: quick reference mixes, multi-track editing, or full session playback with video.

Recording Types

1) Audio Only (Combined Mix)

Best for: Quick playback, sharing, reviewing a jam.

  • Records the combined audio mix

  • Recorded locally on your Lutefish Stream

  • Automatically uploads after you leave the session

  • File format: FLAC (lossless audio)

Use this when you just want a high-quality copy of what everyone heard in the session.

2) STEM Recording (Individual Tracks)

Best for: Mixing, editing, producing in a DAW.

  • Records each participant on a separate track

  • Recorded locally on your Lutefish Stream

  • Automatically uploads after you leave the session

  • File format: FLAC (lossless audio)

  • Tracks may need alignment in your DAW

Important:
Start times of each track may vary slightly.

To make alignment easy:

  • Do a few clear in-time claps at the start of the session

  • Use those transients as a visual alignment reference in your DAW

This option gives you full flexibility for mixing and post-production.

3) Audio + Video (Cloud Recording)

Best for: Sharing full session playback.

  • Records audio and video together

  • Stored and processed in the cloud

  • Only the person who scheduled the session can initiate this feature

  • Only participants with video turned on will appear in the recording

  • Recordings may take up to 2 minutes to buffer before playback in the web player
(We are actively working to improve this.)

Where to Find Your Recordings

All recordings will appear in:

My Music → Jam Sessions

They will be available once processing and upload are complete.

File Format Information (FLAC)

Audio Only and STEM recordings download as FLAC files.

FLAC is:

  • Lossless (full quality)

  • Widely supported across platforms

  • Ideal for editing and archiving

For Apple Users

FLAC is not natively supported in macOS QuickTime.

We recommend:

Both are safe, widely used, and easy to install.
